Congressman Jones response to Libby commutation: Pardon the border agents

In light of President George W. Bush’s recent commutation of I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby’s prison sentence, North Carolina Congressman Walter B. Jones has written a letter to again call on the President to pardon U.S. Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean.

“I am writing to express my deep disappointment that U.S. Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean remain unjustly incarcerated for wounding a Mexican drug smuggler who brought 743 pounds of marijuana across our border,” Jones wrote.

“While you have spared Mr. Libby from serving even one day of his ‘excessive’ 30-month prison term, agents Ramos and Compean have already served 167 days of their 11 and 12-year prison sentences,” Jones wrote. “By attempting to apprehend an illegal alien drug smuggler, these agents were enforcing our laws, not breaking them.”

“Mr. President, it is now time to listen to the American people and members of Congress who have called upon you to pardon these agents,” Jones continued. “By granting immunity and free health care to an illegal alien drug trafficker and allowing our law enforcement officers to languish in prison – our government has told its citizens, and the world, that it does not care about protecting our borders or enforcing our laws.”

“I urge you to correct a true injustice by immediately pardoning these two law enforcement officers,” Jones concluded.

These officers broke the law and decerve to rot in jail as common criminals. They destroyed evidence, covered upa crime scene, then filed false reports. My father is an officer, so my heart goes out their families, but they broke the law, fair and square. They swore to uphold the law, they are not above it.

"In this case, the evidence showed that around 1:00 p.m.(not in the middle of the night) Aldrete , the Mexican alien, initially ran from the agents, but attempted to surrender with his empty hands raised over his head after Agent Compean pointed his shotgun at him. When Agent Compean tried to push Aldrete to the ground with the butt of his shotgun Agent Compean tripped and fell. Aldrete then took off running again toward the Rio Grande River and Mexico. Compean chased Aldrete firing at him with his pistol fourteen times, pausing once to reload and then shoot some more. Agent Ramos shot once and struck Aldrete in the buttocks. Neither agent made any further effort to apprehend him. After the shooting, they lied to their supervisors about the shooting, picked up and threw away the fired shell casings and filed a false investigative report leaving out any mention of the confrontation with Aldrete."

Mention ALL the facts before throwing your opinions out there...

I stayed up last night and watched a rerun of the hearing that Diane Feinstein had on this case. While I think there may be a misapplication of the law, I do not believe these officers should be completely pardoned or have the sentence "completely" commuted. I do believe the sentence is a bit excessive, but I don't think the judge had any choice in the matter.

I will make one comment about the hearing because one of the senators at the hearing said something that was very disturbing to me. I wish I could remember this guy's name off the top of my head but I can't. He seems to think it is ok to shoot unarmed people in the back while they are running away. I think if it were up to him, he would even change the supreme court ruling on that matter. I will be looking to find this senator's name out, because I sure hope he doesn't get re-elected next time.

I guess I have no problem with shooting criminals who sneak across the border. We're not talking a migrant worker but a drug dealer. Furthermore I wish the National Guard units of the border states would begin firing on the Mexican army vehicles as they aid drug smugglers across the border our cops are too under gunned to stop.

If Libby and all of Bush's, and former Presidents, crooked cronies can get a pardon even after being convicted by a jury of their peers these guys deserve one too.

In general is it OK to shoot unarmed people? Probably not, but there are exceptions, my god they only shot him in the butt!

How many years did the drug smuggler get? I'll bet he's back at work.

Hey comrade Jasto, check out a site called Narco News, and pursue the story on the HOUSE OF DEATH murders in Juarez. There you will find what totalitarianism, brought to you by W, A.G. Gonzales, and their pal in El Paso, Jonny Sutton, is all about. But I warn you, it makes your skin crawl, comrade.

This post is about a drug smuggler and two trigger happy agents right? I don't think anyone has said the smuggler was coming here for a better life like most immigrants. I am only being honest because I know that if I was starving and my children had little food, shelter, and opportunity, you bet I'd do whatever it would take to change those circumstances. This country was founded by those who yearned for a better life and were willing to work for it. I'm sorry I got off topic too, what I wanted to say is that these men are guilty and were found so by the jury. We can't have law enforcement going around shooting people in the back, not reporting it, and covering it up.(that chaps my hide)
