By repeatedly making provocative statements during his 10 years in Congress, Tom Tancredo believes he spurred activism and helped block legislation that would have allowed illegal immigrants to eventually gain legal status.
"I have a sense of accomplishment. It makes me feel good," said the Colorado Congressman.
Tancredo leaves office this month. He plans to consult and to continue work on immigration issues and to spend time with his grandchildren.
Tancredo said he regrets not succeeding in his effort to help win release of U.S. Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, who are serving time in prison for shooting and wounding a drug smuggler.
"I think about those guys in prison, and I'm just sick at heart," Tancredo said. "I've done everything I can."
When he left Capitol Hill for the last time in late November, Tancredo gathered with his staff. As they exchanged goodbyes, Tancredo offered his version of high praise.
"We really started something," Tancredo said.

Dear Tom Tancredo, please REST ASSURED that COUNTLESS millions of DEEPLY caring FELLOW Americans are WITH you 100 PERCENT on THIS one! And there are LOTS MORE of US who SUPPORT Ramos and Compean than there are who DON'T!
My blood was boiling after reading about the travesty of justice perpetrated against our Border Patrol Agents. Then I read this, the prosecuting attorney's press release regarding the trial, conviction, and punishment of the officers. It sounds like these guys are the kinds of cops I really despise, so I don't think they should be released. We should be glad two cops who shit on civil liberties are in jail. God knows there are too many bad guys in places of authority.
I am glad they finally got the drug smuggler. Hopefully he'll be put away for the rest of his life.
National Border Council already issued a rebuttal to the link given above by Johnny Suttons office.

Thanks for you work on this blog.
I am one of those few Americans that deeply respects G.W. Bush and I belive he is a good man. But when I think of Ramos and Compean I ache for them and their families. This case alone makes me question who Bush really is. How could he be this stuborn? How could he let known felons go and keep Ramos and Compean in? If he won't take care of these guys then who are we?
Last week, a Bart subway officer in San Francisco shot a handcuffed detainee who was lying on the ground in the back -- on camera -- and was not even arrested for a week. If he explains that he thought he had a Taser in his hand and not a gun he will likely get off.
Ramos and Compean shot a 99% sure armed and desperate to avoid decades in the dungeon drug dealer -- whom they claim aimed what looked like a weapon at them. If they had not admitted being uncertain it was a gun he pointed at them they would not have been prosecuted -- under what the prosecutor took to be a one-size-fits-all Supreme Court ruling against shooting a fleeing suspect without certainty the suspect has a gun.
Which ruling should really be taken to fit suspects for whom there is no indication they have a gun (a wide spread policy of the era which the ruling was clearly aimed at). Even if the fleeing drug dealer had not pointed something at them, they still should have had discretion to shoot because the totality of the circumstances (99% sure armed and desperate) made for a reasonable perception of mortal danger.

Only if the jury buys it--and I think that is not a likely outcome. In that case, "get off" means--at best--that he "only" gets convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

They only claimed it to be so after they'd already been caught out having submitted a false report that said nothing much had happened aside from the suspect absconding back into Mexico.

You're neatly glossing over the false official statement and the destruction of evidence.
Denis, destruction of evidence, false reports, and other attempts at concealment of material facts have always been viewed in the same light: as consciousness of guilt. They always have been. They always will be. If you were to engage in such actions subsequent to shooting somebody, the cops would cheerfully send you up to prison for attempted murder and obstruction--and they would be absolutely right in doing so.
For a guy who complains about the totality of circumstances somehow not being considered by the prosecutor, you are militant in your refusal to consider the totality of Ramos and Compean's actions. Ramos and Compean, if they were not guilty of a criminal act, went out of their way to act guilty.
As I've said elsewhere, I would've been willing to accept it as an honest mistake at the very worst--but in order for me to say "honest mistake," Ramos and Compean would've had to have been honest from the outset.
President Bush has commuted the sentences of these two American Heroes. Welcome home, men!
President Bush has commuted the sentences of these two American Heroes. Welcome home, men!
They're Free!!!!!!!!!!!!
We won! Commuting the sentences is not good enough, they should have been pardoned. However, Ramos and Compean can be home with their families where they belong. Guys, come to SC and I'll buy you dinner! Thank you for your service to our country and my family. I'm sorry for the loss you experienced during this horrific ordeal.
Thank God! Bush finally pardoned this guys.
UPDATE THE BLOG!!!!
FREEDOM AT LAST, FREEDOM AT LAST!
Congratulations to the officers and their families! God Bless You! You are great Americans and we appreciate all of your sacrifice. Keep up the good work. We are proud of you.
Dear Mr Tancredo,
As a Mexican American, USAF (retired)law enforcement officer, you took the lead on getting Agents Ramos and Compean the desparately needed public attention in front of the American public. It was a long, hard, slog because of the communistic, atheistic and traitorous scum in the "major media", who only care about providing aid and comfort to the enemies of the USA in all their vile manifestations.
The fact that President Bush only commuted their sentences, instead of granting a full pardon, speaks of his character flaw, loyalty to a fault. He was loyal to Rumsfeld until it was obvious that Rummies strategy on the War in Iraq was misguided and ineffective. Once Rummie resigned, the Pentagon was finally able to get passed what they tried to do in the first place, that is send pleny of troops to get the job done. Rummie wanted to do it on the cheap with lighter, smaller forces. When Gen Shinseki tried to tell him he needed more troops, Rumsfeld fired him and sent a cold chill down the spines of the other bureaucrats in the military heirarchy, get on board with my plan of else! But it don't work that way when you're dealing with massive numbers of enemy. You can never have too many troops. But I wish that we'd never gone into Iraq in the first place. Pope JP II and Benedict XVI both said this was was an immoral war and I agree with them because they speak with the authority of Christ.
But I digress. Bush was loyal to the US attorney in the Justice Department who prosecuted Ramos and Compean, an by extension, loyal to the other US Attorneys. He should have sent word to the prosecutor to lay off and scrap the investigation. And he should have had the guts to tell the media that they were wrong!
But W is a wimp and I'm sorry he wouldn't defend himself from the enemies of this country, i.e. moveon.org, George Soros, the atheistic and godless freemasons at the Brn'a Brith, the Jewish ADL, ACLU, CNN, MSNBC, CBS, and PBS. From the gitgo, I would scream at him to get some backbone, ala Harry Truman and tell the communists, atheists and ultra-liberals in the media and on the political left to take a flying leap. He was a victim of his own "I'm a uniter, not a divider" rubbish. The people of America that are still on the side of righteousness would have rallied to his defense.
Once it became clear that the left was out to destroy him and the Republican party, he should have fought back ferociously. But instead, he laid down and got the hell beat out of him in the war of public opinion. This is why so many young people are now "Bush-haters". They're a bunch of ignoramuses who are easily misled and obviously brainwashed. I know. I take night classes at a local community college and these liberal professors are crawling out of the woodwork.
Bush was too cowardly to fight back and as a consequence, he led the Republicans down the wrong path of fiscal irresponsibility by acting like Demon-crats. And as a result, they alienated their base.
But you Mr Tancredo, never waivered and never gave up. You are awesome and thanks for all you did for these fine men at the Border Patrol. Too bad W didn't pardon them. The conviction will remain with them for the rest of their lives and they will not be able to work as law enforcement agents again. It was because of you and Fox News, Michael Savage, Sean Hannity, and Lou Dobbs that this case received the publicity that it did. The people responded and kept up the pressure until the President finally gave in, although, half-heartedly or timidly, don't know which one. Was W afraid of the media criticizing him again? Sheesh! Forget about the media, W! They don't represent the millions of ordinary Americans who still know right from wrong and wanted these men free! If Clinton could have Eric Holder pardon Marc Rich because his wife donated millions to Clinton's library, then it would have been a slam dunk to pardon Ramos and Compean. And now Holder, as corrupt as they come, is going to be the next Attorney General for Obama. I gotta hand it to Obama. He's making sure Holder will protect him when he undoubtedly starts to commit his crimes against this country. There is no doubt about that. And the media will just cover up for him again and again.
As for Ramos and Compean, I am not sure if they were guilty or not, you can never be sure when the US government comes after you. But that's what pardon's are all about. For situation like this when a greater good is served by freeing those who protect this country but made a mistake. All I know is that we tolerate the slaughter of millions of innocent children to abortion each year in this country alone, and the murderers go free because our law (Roe vs Wade) is an immoral law that offends all humanity. If you don't believe me, then visit www.durarealidad.com and get a first hand look. The actor is Mexican film star Eduard Verastegui.
These are confusing times indeed. What was wrong is now right and what was right is now wrong. That's the diabolical disorientation of Satan working among the minds of those who have no spiritual protection against his attacks on their minds.
As for Obama, I'm just glad that Obama will only have 2 years of being President before he has to ramp up his reelection campaign so that by year 3, he's on full campaign mode again.
I only pray that Obama's evil, anti-life, pro-homosexual, pro-death, pro-terrorist, and communistic agenda gets hung up by the Republicans in the Senate and fails miserably. The media has setup such high expectations of this "anointed one", that he will not be able to deliver such high hopes. Putting your faith in a man instead of God Himself is a sure recipe for disaster, America! You've been warned and God will humble him and the rest of you who voted for such a evil man!
The Dems now control the House, Senate and White House. Power corrpts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It is scary to realize how many evil people Obama is appointing to his cabinet, or who support him in the House, Senate or state governments, and who are some of the most evil persecutors of the unborn, the Catholic Church and Christians in general. Apostate and heretical Catholics like Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, Dick Durban, John Kerry, Bill Richardson, Mario Cuomo, Geraldine Ferraro, Patrick Kennedy, Pat Leahy, and Barbara Mikulski. The list is legion unfortunately.
May God have mercy on our country and delivery us from this evil. And may God have mercy on all those misguided voters who voted in such a radical figure like Obama. They've committed a mortal sin that will condemn them to hell if they don't repent of it! Obama comes as a forerunner to the Anti-Christ. He mimicks (apes) Christ, just like the devil does, so that unsuspecting fools follow him. But you will know him by his fruits. Just compare the 10 commandments and see if Obama advocate an agenda that is against God's Law. That is a sure sign in how to discern "the Lawless One" and his forerunners , which are spoken of in the Scriptures. You can also compare Obama's rhetoric with his actions when it comes to protecting unborn children. Please visit: http://www.hli.org/sl_2009-01-16.html and check out his record.
